Moments of Fame

Squawkfox hosts the 133rd Festival of Frugality this week. Her theme is very funny — not to be missed! Also not to be missed is What Makes Kids Happy, posted at Financial Reflections. Blindsided by a piratical Verizon bill, Hayden Tompkins at Persistent Illusion has decided to dump cell companies in favor of Skype. Value for Your Life tells a great story about steam-cleaning her carpeting, which left me feeling mighty happy about having laid tile throughout my own shack. As usual, the Festival contains many, many more interesting posts (including Funny’s squib on saving pennies) than anyone can possibly list: gotta visit it for yourself.

The Baglady is hosting the 67th Carnival of Money Stories, which includes Funny’s observation that the state of estate sales may bode ill for us all. SVB over at The Digerati Life contributed an astonishing tale about a couple who shelled out a million bucks for one of those houses sandwiched between Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean: they’re still shelling. Speaking of real estate, Free Money Finance offers five ways to tell whether a seller is ripe for a lowball offer; this post includes some interesting ruminations about buying houses out of foreclosure. At Personal Money Tips, D.B. reveals some interesting and highly advantageous changes you can negotiate with your mortgage lender. Can I Get Rich on a Salary tells the amazing story of a man who continues to manage his finances despite brain cancer.

Rocket Finance posted the fifth Finance Fiesta and included Funny’s ideas for preparing for income loss. SVB has a very cool list of ways to save money in paying your bills. And speaking of lists, Anand Dhillon gives us 25 ways to create more value-which translate into 25 tools for entrepreneurs.

At Home Ec 101, Heather hosts the current Make It from Scratch carnival. Funny’s recipe for sautéed cabbage makes the list here. If you’re feeling bored, you can make your own moisturizing cream, and FIMBY’s version not only looks very appealing, it doesn’t seem to contain any weird ingredients whose names you can’t pronounce. You’ve heard Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” and Cheech’s “Born in East LA”…well, now we have Fowl Vision’s “Born in a Frying Pan“! This edition of the festival has recipes galore. Chief Family Officer provides a recipe for one of my favorites, potatoes Anna…nothing this good can possibly be health!!! And while we’re in the OMG department, you have got to see Jen Carlile’s awesome recipe for lamb’s quarter filo pie posted at Modern Beet-I’m printing it out as I type.

Sound Money Matters hosts the 19th Money Hacks Carnival, replete with Independence-Day-appropriate bons mots on frugality and economy from America’s Founding Fathers. Thanks to SMM for including Funny’s thoughts on the costs and benefits of making your own dog food! This carnival includes some highly interesting ideas and insights. Near and dear to my heart is Sarah Spy’s list of devices to extract bargains at high-end restaurants. Shark Investor points out the many reasons that DIY is effectively the same as alternative income. At Blueprint for Financial Prosperity, Jim stirs up a little controversy with his discovery of a hack that lets nonmembers buy Costco gas. Be This Way posts five excellent ways to save money during the summer. And at the Digerati Life, SVB discusses ways entrepreneurs can help you with your small business.
