Weren't people getting discounts on digital TV converters in the mail? I'm sure a digital converter is much cheaper than a new TV.
Also, I've been very happy with Windows. A lot of the malware burden can be alleviated by using Firefox and running a free antivirus. A lot of the junkware, or secret stuff that companies like Apple and Sony install on your computer without telling you, can be detected by CCleaner. CCleaner also lets you turn off programs that run automatically at startup, which lengthen your boot time. I want certain programs to run then, but I don't need iTunes helper or Quicktime boot or Adobe whatever. The Mac operating system is not as intrinsically better than Windows anymore; I've heard of lots of people having mysterious problems with their Macs, both software and hardware.
The cheapest Windows computers are really cheap. The cheapest Linux computers are cheaper, but don't go that route because even experts have a hard time getting other devices, like a DVD player, to talk to your computer.
