Amen to that! As a single person in an office full of marrieds, I often feel guilty leaving work at 5pm despite the fact I get there a full hour before most of my co-workers. They “have” to leave to pick up their kids or cook dinner for their spouse whereas the perception is that singles don’t have as much to do. While I may not have kids or someone else to cook for, I don’t get paid any extra for arriving earlier and staying later…

I’m surprised it’s only 36%. Seems like every other woman I know is single. We’re all over 44 though, I wonder if the percentage goes up for the older demographic.

I think your day would only have been easier had your housemate been a stay-at-home housemate. If he/she also worked until 5p you would have had two people rushing all around.

Any organization that throws a potluck at 5:30 on a week night is pretty inconsiderate. As an aside – I hate potlucks too!

I’m exhausted just reading this post, I can only imagine how you must feel….when I’ve been single, I have always had a congenial house mate or two for just this reason. It is too freakin hard to maintain a life in a couple-centric culture as a single person. But you are so right, there is so much society could do to make it easier — it is not hard, it is a matter of political will.
