Love your site...had to comment today because PVCC is where I took English 101. That was a million years ago when it was PV community college center. From what I remember: all the class sizes were small, classrooms were nice, cafeteria food was good, I loved my Psych 101 instructor and everything transferred to UofA.
My DH has taught adjunct classes at Phx college (before we moved to VA) and liked it. A little admin red tape the first year, then much better.
Good luck to you.

Congrats on the positive news! Maybe you could teach more at the community college? Anyway, it looks as though you won't be in as bad a place as you thought. I have confidence that you will be able to work through this rough spot. Good luck!

Wow - congratulations! I find the community colleges are often much better to their faculty, where they can't offer a lot of money they make up for it with intangibles like graciousness and treating faculty like human beings.

I think they know that it is sometimes a pro-active choice to teach there, esp Ph.Ds. who could teach at say, GDU, so CCs do their best to make the environment attractive.

Personally, I generally like the students better at CCs, because they are usually paying for themselves and so do their reading etc, they are often older, thus they have a work ethic and some maturity, approaching courses like a job, not party-time, and the teacher can make more of a difference in their lives with excellence in teaching. Be excellent or not at Yale, for example, the wealthier kids there are going to do well no matter what, excellence in teaching is just gravy. At a CC? You'll change lives.

That is just terrific news, congratulations.

@ kjg: Yes. And with your master's degree and your academic experience, you should have no trouble picking up something at Estrella Mountain or Glendale. The campus was alive with students: with a recession in full swing, everyone who's out of work is back at school. They're not hiring to replace retiring f/t faculty right now, because of the financial fiasco, so that means they HAVE to hire adjunct to take up the slack. Fourteen grand isn't enough on its own, but as one of two or more income streams, it's a substantial chunk of "enough."

Congratulations on landing the 3 classes. Obviously, they didn't want someone with your qualifications to walk away. Get it--your qualifications--over-qualifications. Okay, you weren't all that interested in teaching composition courses again, but note--there are many people applying for a few teaching jobs--and you are offered three. Maybe there is still hope for us old gals who are not yet ready for forced retirement.
