Moments of Fame

Looking for a carnival to place my rant about the unnecessarily complicated process of applying for jobs online, I came across the HR Administration Carnival, which went online today at Dayamn!!! This roundup will interest all of us who are interested in advancing in our day jobs or who have recently been laid off. It presents a lot of blogs many of us have yet to discover—for me, Nickel was the only familiar blogger here—and some are posting some very useful information. Right off the bat, I’m bookmarking 100 Resources for Laid-Off Employees and Job Hunters, at Construction Management Degree. Simon Stapleton considers the question of whether one should take a job that represents a step backward in a career. An Indian blogger named Sidhusaaheb holds forth interestingly about some of the most bird-brained HR management tactics he’s encountered.

The Carnival of Personal Finance is live at MoneyNing, where David has brought the 200th edition (!) to life. This huge and venerable carnival as usual includes many excellent pieces. Pinyo tells us some interesting things about himself and about why he blogs over at Moolanomy. Jim’s rumination, at Bargaineering, about the real value (or not) of all those bullets we try to get on our résumés is David’s worthy other pick for Editor’s Choice. Dorian Wales discusses the recent stock surge, while The Smarter Wallet predicts it’ll never last. Sound Money Matters explains how she and her husband are managing to save 25 percent of their income. At Saving to Invest, guest writer Tony Parker stirs up a lively exchange by noting that some questionable financial advice comes from the pulpit. Pay Less for Food highlights “complement products,” a merchandising device to get grocery shoppers to make impulse buys. Dough Roller has a nice list of money-saving gadgets (i want the Tesla roadster!). Funny’s latest rant about money and politics appears in this distinguished company.

The Festival of Frugality is up at StretchyDollar.com, whose proprietor stepped in at the last minute when the scheduled host had to deal with an emergency. Funny’s rave about the lightrail appears this week. Speaking of rhapsodies, over at Budgets are Sexy, J. Money is ready to start buying stocks again, and this time he has a plan. My Frugal Adventures holds forth on price-saving strategies for purchasing wine. An interesting essay on living the Bohemian life appears at My Inconvenient Body, itself a generally interesting blog—worth a visit.

I’ve Got a Little Space to fill again hosts the beloved Make It from Scratch Carnival, where Funny’s update on using olive oil on the face appears. The cooks have outdone themselves…just looking at the pictures will make you hungry. Have you ever made crackers? I know it sounds like overkill, given all the boxed crackers on the market, but it is s-o-o-o worth it! Knit Wit on the Prairies has a recipe that works in the microwave. This blueberry crumb cake from It’s Frugal Being Green is to die for! And if you’ve ever wondered how to prepare plantains, Munchin’ in Manila offers a recipe for banana cue. Out of the kitchen into the craft room: look at these KEWL plant markers invented by CraftJR. This site provides some images, and you might also be able to use a picture from a seed packet. Great gifts for gardeners…or for your own use.

This week’s Money Hacks Carnival is up at Consumer Boomer. Funny’s advice to keep certain financial records permanently makes the cut here. Have you wondered exactly what bolt of lightning will strike if you fail to file your tax return? Jeff Rose gives the details and explains how to avoid the wrath of Uncle Sam. At Bible Money Matters, Peter considersthe “Making Home Affordable” act and how to tell whether you qualify.

And speaking of moments of fame, Karen at MSN’s Smart Spending gave a plug to Funny’s lead to a recipe for DIY stick deodorant. Thanks, Karen…that led to a big spike in traffic! :-)
