Moments of Fame

Funny’s rumination on what a master’s degree is “worth”—financially and otherwise—appeared on MSN Smart Spending this week. Many thanks to Karen again!

Bible Money Matters hosts the Carnival of Money Stories this week, kindly including “Money Happens.” Here are a few of the many posts here I enjoyed:

Guest post author Amanda Grossman reflects on frugal habits in “The Automatic Poorhouse”
Brad Chaffee considers the personal implications of giving and accepting loans or gifts at Enemy of Debt.
Frugal Dad gets a lively conversation going when he tells about an annoying department-store credit-card promotion.

Poorer than You has come up with an original approach to this week’s Carnival of Personal Finance, with some nifty historic pictures. Funny’s rant about other people’s pets appears here. Some especially interesting entries:

At Studenomics, the Studenomist gets some laughs with a witty recitation of the four financial benefits of being a college student.
No Debt Plan considers some ways to prepare for future tax increases, at least one of which  may be somewhat controversial.
Jeff Rose offers some advice about financial planning and divorce, a cogent article.

Sigh. About gifts: my mother’s culture is really into gifts, and if you’re given one, instead of a thank-you note you’re required to give one back at the next appropriate occasion. Last year, my bf’s parents, who are not of that culture, sent me a gift for my birthday, and I freaked out, and then I called my mom and she freaked out. There’s one of me, and there’s two of them, and now I have to get them things for their birthdays (in addition to the thank-you note they expect). I knew that when I got married, I’d have to send them birthday gifts, but I wasn’t expecting to have this burden so soon.

@ synapse: OMG. This is such a rich topic. We must blog about it. Who else is checking in here? Would you please share your gift-giving/getting stories? I’ll try to come up with a framework to bring them all together in a coherent way.
