About gifts: my mother&#039;s culture is really into gifts, and if you&#039;re given one, instead of a thank-you note you&#039;re required to give one back at the next appropriate occasion.  Last year, my bf&#039;s parents, who are not of that culture, sent me a gift for my birthday, and I freaked out, and then I called my mom and she freaked out.  There&#039;s one of me, and there&#039;s two of them, and now I have to get them things for their birthdays (in addition to the thank-you note they expect).  I knew that when I got married, I&#039;d have to send them birthday gifts, but I wasn&#039;t expecting to have this burden so soon.</description>
