Sigh. About gifts: my mother’s culture is really into gifts, and if you’re given one, instead of a thank-you note you’re required to give one back at the next appropriate occasion. Last year, my bf’s parents, who are not of that culture, sent me a gift for my birthday, and I freaked out, and then I called my mom and she freaked out. There’s one of me, and there’s two of them, and now I have to get them things for their birthdays (in addition to the thank-you note they expect). I knew that when I got married, I’d have to send them birthday gifts, but I wasn’t expecting to have this burden so soon.
