Moments of Fame

Modern Tightwad, celebrating the hot times in Portland, hosts an Extreme Heat edition of the Festival of Frugality, kindly including Funny’s squib about the $64 butternut squash. This week’s FoF is truly huge, and it contains many, many excellent articles. You need to go there to appreciate it. But a few posts that caught my eye were these:

Wealth Pilgrim’s Two Steps to Save an Additional $55,012 on College Costs. Really simple, and really first-rate advice.
Jenn’s What to Do with Too Much Lettuce in the Garden, at Frugal Upstate. Amazing and interesting ideas…I’m definitely trying some of these this fall when leaf veggie season returns to the low desert.
Silicon Valley Blogger’s guest blogger, Rob Bennett, contributes Save Money by Paying Yourself Last, at the Digerati Life. I noticed this contrarian idea when the post first went up and enjoyed reading it again.

The Make It from Scratch Carnival, hosted by Liss at Frills in the Hills, is exceptionally rich this week. You’ll find some truly wonderful things in here, such as…

Jennifer’s Homemade Chocolate Syrup at Foodophiles. O…M…G. (swoons!) What else can one say?
Not to be outdone by delicious sweet stuff, Stephanie posts an astonishing and beautiful recipe for preserving cabbage at Make It from Scratch. Next trip to the grocer’s, I’m picking up a cabbage!
Check out Kristen’s DIY sanitary hand gel at Frugality in the Making.

And thanks to Liss for including Funny’s not-QUITE-make-it-from-scratchy discovery that you can clean your pool with a garden hose.

Over at Christian Personal Finance, Bob hosts this week’s Carnival of Personal Finance, embellished with some nifty quotations. Funny’s tongue-in-cheek post about our legislator’s plan to sell state buildings and rent them back appears here. Check out, among many others:

Paul’s wily ad hoc air conditioner, found at Fiscal Geek. Fun…and brings back memories of the good old days to us dinosaurs.
Matt B’s 11 Relatively Unconventional Ways to Make Extra Cash, at Financial Methods. You’ll have to be brave to try some of these!
Free Money Finance’s Five Steps to Branding Yourself and Growing Your Career, part of an ongoing discussion on this subject. Several constructive ideas here…and look back over the links at the end for several other insightful posts.

If you haven’t visited Funny for awhile, don’t miss the Carnival of Money Stories, which I was privileged to host this Monday. Many good stories, how-to’s, helpful hints, and leads.
