@samCFO: They’re required to take you off their list if you ask them to. I don’t know how much time they’re allowed, though, before they actually do it. However, if ’twere me, I’d write down the date on a calendar, and if they called one day after that, I’d report them to the US Attorney General. It’s very easy: just go to the national Do Not Call site online and find the link to file a complaint.

Actually, I think the do-not-call list must be helping to some extent. Even though off-shore boiler rooms simply ignore it, I used to get several nuisance calls a day, every day. I hardly ever get sales calls anymore. One reason is that I quit giving out my phone number, or, when forced, I made up a number; another is that I connected a device called the Telezapper to the land line. Works wonders! They’re available and inexpensive at Radio Shack.

The do-not call list IS a joke. But you’re right, most of my unwelcome phone calls are probably where I have indeed given my number out for free or I ALREADY have a relationship with the company and they are trying to sell me their new, latest and greatest.
Bank of America called me 3x so far this week with “a GREAT refi deal” – no thanks, I’ll stick with my 30yr fixed AND STOP CALLING! They told me it would take 30 days before I would be off their “Internal Lists”. We’ll see…
