How to Opt Out of Behavioral Advertising: Some advertisers track and observe you as you are cruising the Web. This is a serious invasion of privacy, claims to the contrary notwithstanding. It is possible to opt out of some (but apparently not all) advertisers at this site. To opt out of Google’s preference-based advertising, go to this page. In addition, Google offers a browser plug-in that allows you to permanently opt out of DoubleClick, the most egregious of the behavior-trackers.
Skimlinks: As of February 20, 2012, Funny about Money began using the Skimlinks affiliate advertising program. This system inserts advertising links retroactively into keywords on various posts throughout the site. Thus some but not all links to products and advertisers are affiliate ads, even if those that do not link to Amazon.com. While FaM receives a small fee when purchases are made through such links, this does not mean FaM or its parent company, The Copyeditor’s Desk, Inc., endorses any product advertised through Skimlinks or any other affiliate advertising link.
