…gets creepier and creepier every day…
Just imagine giving this guy access to that kind of data collection by virtue of the nation’s highest public office… Because Big Brother isn’t the government bound by the US Constitution but is a company that can be subpoenaed, just about every detail of our private lives is accessible not just to anybody who wants to sell us something or push ads in our faces, but to anybody who wants to control our behavior and our thinking. Or put us in jail because we don’t agree with their thinking.

Tell ya what’s creepy….DW and I sitting together while I’m on my lap top. Aaaand we will be talking about say buying a new car….Ads will come up on my lap top for cars….Talk about plumbing and ads for plumbers come up. Pretty sure this is the folks at Google….they seem to be getting bolder and bolder…Big Brother indeed…
Is that so? Holy mackerel. They say you should stick a piece of tape over the camera at the top of your computer screen. Maybe you should turn of the microphone, if that’s even possible. You’d probably have to jump through that hoop every time you turned the machine on.
Hmmm… This is interesting: http://null-byte.wonderhowto.com/how-to/hack-like-pro-remotely-record-listen-microphone-anyones-computer-0143966/ Here’s a guy who claims you can get into someone’s computer and record conversation.
Credibility seems a little low there. Here’s something from the Daily Mail that claims hackers can eavesdrop on your phone conversations: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3202504/Hackers-access-call-message-send-track-location-moment-computer-expert-shows-just-easy-eavesdropping-is.html Again…The Daily Mail isn’t exactly an avatar of fine journalism.
Huffington Post weighs in…right up there with The Daily Mail in the credibility department, but still… http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rebecca-abrahams/your-computer–phone-came_b_5398896.html

WHOAH!! Lookit this! http://www.privacyrights.org/wireless-communications-voice-and-data-privacy
And here’s a really, REALLY good reason (a whole slew of them, actually) NOT to have a cell phone: http://www.privacyrights.org/wireless-communications-voice-and-data-privacy Jeez. This one is kind of dry reading, but if you plow through it, the damn thing will set your hair on end. Who doesn’t have their computers and printers linked wirelessly now?
Lordie…my son uses a VPN for privacy — makes it look like he’s in some foreign country. No wonder! I think I’ll ask him to set that up on my system. He says it slows your connection, so I haven’t tried to get it — Cox is quite slow enough, thank you.
And if you have a smartphone (who besides me doesn’t?): https://www.privacyrights.org/content/privacy-age-smartphone Jezus Aitch Keerist!
This stuff is just too, too disturbing. Besides, it’s already 5:30 and I’ve got to get back to work.
One thing’s for sure: I just changed my mind about getting a smartphone. Don’t think sooooo….
Just happened again, this time with kitchen range hoods…..One is going up in one of the rentals and we were talking about whether to buy a used one on CL…or go to Home Depot. You guessed it…..an ad comes up in the banner for….Home Depot….Wife already has here camera “eye” taped over on her computer….Where is my duct-tape?….
What you need is an ad-blocker. AdBlock Plus for Firefox is THE business. I never see ads anymore.
A few sites ask you to turn off your ad-blocker before your access their content. In that case, I just go somewhere else.
Yeah..I know. They have to sell advertising to support their sites and their news organizations. As soon as they figure out how to post unobtrusvie ads and stop their advertisers from stalking me around the Internet, I’ll consider shutting off the ad-blocker. Until then…not so much.
