Coffee heat rising

PC conversation

For the love of God! We’re told that my son has just been canned from his job because — horrors — he uttered some politically incorrect remark in front of a fanatic feminist coworker. Holeeeee shee-ut!

She doesn’t know who his dad is — one of the most prominent and powerful corporate lawyers in the Southwest. Poor she…  But seriously: even if Dad kicks holes in her complaints, it’s going to mean stress and hassle and time wasted and expense and very probably loss of my son’s job.

BE CAREFUL what you say in workplace and other public or semi-public settings. You never know what kind of a nut case is on the other end of a conversation.

Also, for this reason (the lurking risk of absurd accusations, unfair dismissal, etc.), you need to know an employment lawyer. A GOOD one. And you need to get acquainted with him or her now, not after the Vigoro hits the fan.

And as long as we speak of networking: you also should make sure you know and stay acquainted with people who are active in and reasonably well placed in your job category. Whatever it is you do for a living: make it a point to meet and become friendly with others you are working in that field. In particular, you want to make friends with people who can help you to find a new job if and when you need it. And, one hopes, in short order.

Fortunately, my son’s dad is one of the most prominent corporate lawyers in the Southwest. Though he’s retired, he still should be able to hook the kid up with a practicing attorney who can help him through this latest fiasco.

But remember: life is a series of chain links, each of which is a fiasco. Fiasco after fiasco after fiasco! So, you do need to be ready at all times with contacts who can help you through the next shenanigan that comes up the pike. Be prepared.

Now, not later!
