Coffee heat rising

Hotter Than the Hubs…Still

Seven in the morning. The dog and I are back from the Morning Trudge. She’s taken up her position in the cool cave under the toilet. The human is desperately swilling iced tea.

Ugh! What an AWFUL morning! Hot and sticky and swampy…feels like hideous Saudi Arabia, there on the shore of the Persian Gulf where we lived for ten years. That was an awful place then. And this is an awful place just now.

We walked by our transplanted neighbor J’s house. It used to belong to SDXB, until he got spooked by Tony the Romanian Landlord and ran away to Sun City. In his panic, SDXB merrily sold the place for a pence to the City of Phoenix, who gave it away to a welfare case.

That lady is a sweetheart and a nice person to have as a neighbor. But she has neither the experience nor the cash to maintain an aging upper-middle-class house. Sooo…. the place has more or less gone to pot.

And of course, that affects property values for all of us.

Thank you, Big Brother!

😀

Occasionally I think about moving down into M’hijito’s neighborhood. Centrally located, within walking distance of the beloved AJ’s Overpriced Grocery Store, madly gentrifying, steps from a bus line….  But…

But GAWD, do I hate moving! Even if the cost were irrelevant (which ain’t the case anymore!), packing up four bedrooms, a living room, a family room, a dining room, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a two-car garage is more than I care to contemplate. Just. Too. Much. Work!

But…hmmm….  It might be worth it.

Just depends on which way the wind blows.

If the city continues to give away houses here, property values will tank. In that case, I won’t be able to get enough for this house to move into a comparably middle-class neighborhood, and when M’Hijito inherits this place, its value will be nil. So…

Could be worth selling out now and jumping to a more stable district.

My neighborhood is “less stable,” shall we say, because we are the next one south of a dangerous slum. The low-income district to the north of us is notorious, and it took some nerve (and maybe some stupidity?) to buy into our area.

Because of that neighboring blight, I was able to afford much nicer housing than I could have hoped to buy anywhere else in the central city or the East Valley.

Our area has stayed stolidly middle-class since I moved in — a good 15 years ago. But it’s beginning to look like that may not be the case much longer. The accursed city ran a train line up Main Drag West, conveniently bringing every bum in town up to our neighborhood. The nearby grocery stores are getting old…the infrastructure is getting old…everything is getting old. So…

It may be time to start thinking about moving elsewhere. Or consigning myself now to the inevitable old folks’ prison.

At any rate: for the moment…yes. The place is still pleasantly tidy and blandly middle-class. But how long will that be the case?

Anyone’s guess…

NOW what???

Wooooooooooooooooooooo…….

1:20 in the morning and a weird noise is coming from….where?

I think it’s coming from the neighbor’s house. Possibly their air-conditioning? (Yes, in Phoenix you DO need to run your AC well into September…)

* Trudge outside. Explore around the yard.
* It ain’t my pool
* It ain’t my air-conditioner

Not much else on my property that could be making a weird noise.

That doesn’t PROVE it’s not coming from somewhere around my house or yard. It’s the freakin’ middle of the night…pitch dark…I can’t see much out there…I’m dead tired…

Awww jeez!  Whatever it is, it’s getting LOUDER. But…better yet, I can hardly hear it when I go outdoors, but inside: it’s resonating through the bedroom window.

No, it’s not the bedroom ceiling fan.

WTF?

Welp: forget getting any more sleep tonight.

If I’m right that it’s coming from outside, then it’s likely to be an expensive fix…unless, with any luck at all, it’s coming from the neighbor’s house.

Uh oh…. The AC unit just clicked off, so commanded by the thermostat. Hmmmm…. And guess what? No woooooooooooo.

Yeah. That suggests, o’course, that it IS coming from my place. That it’s probably emanating from the air-conditioning unit. And that my bank account is about to be cleaned out.

Ohhhhhh goodie!

****

Waitaminit… NOPE! The wooooo is back, but my AC is still off. A miracle! The noise, whatever it is, is NOT coming from my gear.

Apparently it’s coming from the neighbor’s house, or from some damfool thing off in the distance.

Hmmm… Pray for the best, then.  For me, that is…not for whatever poor wretch owns the freshly busted machinery.

Phoenix: garden spot!

Soggy-Dogging on through the Day

Good grief! It’s only 100 degrees in the shade of the beloved back porch...and yet it seems hotter than that. Asked to make a guess, I’d have said it was about 108.

Just back from a stroll around the ‘Hood. No, the little dawg did NOT come with me. It’s way, way too hot for the short stuff out there. The pavement alone would burn off her feet!

But…oh, my! Is it ever beautiful out there.

Well. Visually, that is.

Spectacular cumulus clouds are piled up in the eastern sky, glowing white in the full sun. Wunderground posits a 13% chance of rain. I’d put it at a little higher than that…but not much.

So…yeah. It would be nice if some water would fall out of the sky. But it doesn’t seem likely.

My original plan was to walk over to a nearby shopping center and retrieve the contact information for a dirty-shirt lawyer who practices there. But…meh! No hurry for that: the matter is nothing urgent and nothing to do with business or with much money. So that guy can wait until the weather settles down. 😀

Last time I asked the ex-husband — who spent his career as a high-powered corporate lawyer — he was pretty much out of touch with that community. All the guys he used to know seem to have retired. So decided not to pester him this time.

Meanwhile, the vet put Ruby on prednisone.

I beg to differ. He hasn’t explained what ails her — if anything, really — or why prednisone is the drug of choice. It can have some nasty side effects, so…I’m inclined to drop it after this first dose.

Like we didn’t have ENOUGH problems here at the Funny Farm, without deliberately making the dog sicker than she is. /eyeroll/

Mean-meanwhile, I’m reamed, steamed, & dry-cleaned. Why is not fully clear. Probably the humid, muggy heat. Even inside the house, the air is heavy with dampness. Sooo…. I guess it’s time to stop the keyboard-tapping and get something useful done.

I hope.

Another SoggyDoggy Day…

Ugh!  It is SO HOT outside that it’s not even 9:00 in the morning and the thermometer in the shade of the back porch registers 95 degrees.

What do you suppose the thing will say…oh…along about noon?  Or better yet: at 3:00 p.m.?

Not even Rasty Nasty, the garden spot occupied by ARAMCO employees on the shore of the Persian Gulf, was this hot as the sun was rising.

I hate Arizona. If my son weren’t here, I would be SOOOOOO LONG GONE!

But he is here. This is where his job is and it’s where his dad’s family is and it appears to be where he’s staying. So…it’s where I’m staying.

Ugh.

That doesn’t deflect me from stating that yes, I do hate Arizona.

My father dragged me and my mother here when he retired. They had spotted Sun City as we were driving cross-country back in the day — they would drive around the country when he took his lengthy, hard-earned vacations from Aramco. He would get three months off every two years. Their idea of “fun” was to buy a car in New York City and take off across the country. They would drive at top speed to Texas to visit his brother and then race across the country to Berkeley to visit my mother’s California relatives; then shoot like a rocket back to New York, where we’d board a plane to fly back to Dhahran.

What a horrible existence.

Other Americans found better ways to enhance their leave time. They would go to Switzerland, for example…or to the south of France. Or whatnot. But I do hafta say: I do not remember any of my little classmates saying they flew back to America, grabbed a car in New York, trekked across the continent and back; then jumped on a plane for Dhahran.

It is, in a way, kinda puzzling that they decided they’d found Nirvana in Sun City.

Y’know why they were so delighted?

No kids.

My father abominated children.

When they found a whole, gigantic housing development out in the middle of the Arizona desert, devoid of kids, my father thought he’d died and gone to heaven.

Forthwith, before he retired, they decided to move there as soon as he could quit his job.

It was another few years before they managed that.

They waited until I could get into the University of Arizona: you weren’t allowed to live in Sun City unless you had no kids or your kids were out of the house. Farming the brat out to a dormitory in Tucson did the job.

So much for any ideas I had about going to UC Berkeley or to a tony private liberal-arts school. Hah!

As soon as they could shove me out the door, then, he quit his job and they moved to Sun City.

‘Twasn’t long before a major recession hit. He had all his money invested in insurance securities, which went right down the tubes.

So the poor guy had to go back to work, leaving my mother in lovely Sun City while he shipped out of southern California. A fate worse than death, to his mind…  Seriously: what he most wanted in life was to QUIT WORKING. and when he got his chance to retire and move to Arizona, he thought he’d fulfilled his life’s dream.

So you can imagine (or maybe you can’t…who could?) how he felt when he had to go back to sea, after watching his investments melt away.

Awful! Awful to contemplate, really.

After another three years, he was at last able to retire permanently. They lived in quaint and snobbish Sun City until my mother died of the cancer induced by her ceaseless smoking and probably also by the gawdawful treatment for her amoebic dysentery.

She died horribly, with him waiting on her through every hideous moment of her final illness.

And — no exaggeration — the day she died he was getting himself moved into the old-folkerie: the “life-style community” called Orangewood where she had declined to take up residence.

Would she have died if they’d moved in there when he asked her to do so?

No doubt. They might have found a doctor who was smart enough not to dismiss her symptoms as old-lady neurosis. But evidently by the time the cancer was symptomatic, it was too late to save her.

What a way to end your working career, eh? Some retirement.

Occasionally I wonder…. If they had retired to the Bay Area, where my mother’s family lived, would she have gotten treatment for the cancer that would have saved her life?  Or at least might have beaten it back long enough for them to have another few years of retirement together?

Anyone’s guess, of course. Probably not, I imagine. Cancer is the Family Disease, so one would suspect a doctor would have had little luck treating it.

But maybe if events had unrolled a little differently, at least he wouldn’t have met the Dragon Lady and married her. Then the last few years of his life wouldn’t have morphed into years from Hell.

Maybe.

Hotter Than the Hubs…and Stickier!

Yeah: it’s not only Arizona-level HOT outside, the air is soggy and icky.

I’ll tellya: this is one of those days when I am rampantly thankful that I’m NOT a yard worker. Just walking around the block in tow behind the dog is gawdawful! Having to actually get out in this heat and humidity and…WORK?! It beggars the imagination.

Honestly, I do NOT understand how those guys do it. Granted, they’re accustomed to the job and its miseries. But still…it is monstrously hot out there, and wet as the inside of a shower stall. No kidding: at 5:00 in the afternoon, when the temp should be easing off a bit, it’s 105 degrees in the shade of the back porch.

Still without a car… Meaning that tomorrow morning I’ll have to jump out of the sack in time to walk to the nearest grocery store and get there when they open: 6:00 a.m.  Goodie!

Oh, well: at least that means the shopping will be done by around 7:00 a.m. So I can loaf the rest of the day….

Speaking of can and can’t loaf…how glad ARE you that you’re not a cleaning lady?

Dear Gawd! The beloved Wonder-Cleaning Lady was here this afternoon. How DOES that woman do what she does?????

Seriously: even with the AC blasting away, the house is hot. She’s overheated from driving and walking through the gawdawful outside heat. And when she gets here, what does she do? She works like a freakin’ HORSE half the day.

This, after spending the first half of the day working like a horse at someone else’s house. What an extraordinary woman she is!

I’d be stressed trying to do the amount of physical work she does during cooler seasons. But when it’s hotter than the Hubs of Hades, I cannot even begin to imagine how that lady does her job!

***

Y’know, on the one hand, I feel like I’m exploiting her. Seriously: anyone who could earn a living doing something else WOULD earn their living doing something else.

But on the other, I’m…

…radically thankful that this splendid, thorough, intelligent woman beats herself up cleaning my house for me…
…more than happy to pay her whatever she asks (and probably would cheerfully pay her more!)…
…amazed at what a marvelous job she does…every time she comes here…

She really is a wonderful woman and a wonderful employee. What amazing luck (on my part) to have come across her!

And the truth is…at my ever-advancing age, there’s no way I could clean this whole house in one day. I’d have to break the job up into a chore a day:

Monday: Clean the bathrooms and kitchen
Tuesday: Change and wash the sheets
Wednesday: Do the rest of the laundry & ironing
Thursday: Vacuum and mop the floors
Friday:  …And so on, ad nauseam!

It would mean I would never have a day without housecleaning tasks (and yes, I do hate cleaning house!!!). And because I hate cleaning house, I would never do as good a job as Wonder-Cleaning Lady does.

Well. All I can say about it is thank the heavens for people who are willing to hire out to do maintenance and cleaning tasks. Bless’em all!

A Miracle!!!

The damm computer let me IN!!!!  Not only did it let me in, it did so on the FIRST TRY!

On an evening when everything else I’ve touched has instantly gone on the fritz. that’s a small freakin’ miracle.

Hmmmmm….   Looks like the dishwasher decided to come on after all. That’s one fewer repairman to have to call tomorrow. (It being a bit after 8:00 p.m. here just now…)

Isn’t it amazing, though, how everything contrives to crap out all at once? Really, there’s only one possible explanation: machines are sentient.

Especially household machines. 😀

And they think watching the human grind its teeth is very funny. Machine humor, eh?
